Why ATEC for trauma counselling

The Australian Trauma Education Centre is built around trauma. We are a trauma training provider, including trauma-sensitive yoga (TCTSY), and all of our counselling is trauma-informed. We put safety, choice, collaboration and clear expectations first, and we go at your pace. You do not need to have it all worked out before your first session.

What you get for $49.95

  • A 50 minute one to one counselling session on Zoom, from wherever you are in Australia
  • A supervised student counsellor who works in a trauma-informed way
  • Confidential support under the Australian Counselling Association Code of Ethics
  • No GP referral or mental health care plan needed

Who you will see

Sessions are with a supervised student counsellor, completing their counselling training at the Cairnmillar Institute. All sessions are supervised onsite by our lead counsellor. You can choose who you see in the booking calendar, or take the first available time. ATEC is led by our lead counsellor, an ACA registered counsellor and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapist.

Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You do not need a GP referral or a mental health care plan. If you have been diagnosed with PTSD or think you may have it, please also talk to your GP about treatment options.

How much does it cost, and can I claim it?

$49.95 for a 50 minute Zoom session, paid when you book. Sessions with our low-cost clinic are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, so there is no rebate. Cancel with at least 48 hours' notice for a full refund.

Who is it for?

Adults 18 and over anywhere in Australia, except Cardinia Shire residents, who can use our free Fernlea clinic.

Do I have to talk about what happened?

No. You decide what you share, and when. Many people start with how things are for them now, rather than what happened. In your first session your counsellor will ask a few questions about your safety, and you can always say you would rather not go into details.

Is this a crisis service?

No. If you are in danger, call 000. More services are on our emergency contacts page.
