What is Trauma-Informed De-Escalation?
1 Day Intensive Workshop
Occupational violence and aggression (OVA) and escalating behaviour are rising across education, disability support, healthcare, community services and customer-facing workplaces in Berwick, the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire and greater south-east Melbourne. Many traditional de-escalation programs focus primarily on compliance or physical techniques. At the Australian Trauma Education Centre (ATEC) in Berwick we take a different approach.
Our Trauma-Informed De-Escalation Training helps teams understand why behaviour escalates often as a trauma or nervous-system response, and equips them with practical, relational skills to intervene early, maintain dignity, and protect psychological and physical safety for everyone involved.
Core difference: We teach staff to recognise trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn), regulate their own nervous system, and use communication that reduces rather than increases threat.
This creates safer workplaces across Berwick, Casey, Cardinia and surrounding areas, and better outcomes for the people they support.

📘 What’s Included?
✔ Half-day (3.5–4 hours) or Full-day (6–7 hours). Can be split across two sessions to suit rostering.
✔ Face-to-face at your workplace in Berwick, Casey, Cardinia or greater Melbourne (preferred), or live virtual. Custom scenarios developed with you beforehand.
✔ Up to 16–20 participants for optimal practice and discussion. Larger groups possible with an additional facilitator. -

Can it be customised for our setting?
Yes, every program is tailored. We meet with you beforehand to understand your specific risks, client groups and workplace culture in Casey or Cardinia.
How long does the training take?
Half-day or full-day options. We can also deliver across two shorter sessions to fit shift patterns in Berwick and surrounding areas.
Is this suitable for education and NDIS teams?
Very much so. We regularly work with VET educators, student support staff, NDIS providers and community services organisations across south-east Melbourne.
Do you include physical techniques?
We focus primarily on prevention, recognition, communication and personal safety strategies. Heavy physical intervention or restraint training is not the core of this program. We can discuss your exact needs.
How quickly can we book?
Typical lead time is 3–5 weeks to allow proper customisation. Urgent requests for teams in Berwick can sometimes be accommodated.
