— About the training

Want to gain skills in trauma sensitive yoga facilitation?

While the 20-hour Foundational Training does not qualify participants to facilitate Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga, it does provide the foundations for making your current scope of practice more trauma-informed.

For example, if you are an educator, this could provide you with ideas on how to implement mindful movement with your learners. If you are a clinician, use your learning to facilitate movement practices during client therapy sessions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 20-hour Foundational Trauma Sensitive Yoga Training?

This 20hr workshop provides International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) and Yoga Australia (YA) members continuing education credits of 18hrs and 20hrs respectively. Credits may also be available with other professional registration bodies.

This workshop satisfies the pre-requisites to apply for the 300hr Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) Certification Program held annually live online and pre-recorded online from September to April.

This workshop is not intended as an intervention for those who have experienced trauma. Talking about trauma, even in the context of professional training, can be triggering/overwhelming.

Feren is an E-RYT 500, Level 2 Aus Active Instructor and TCTSY licensed trainer. These workshops are run by the Center of Trauma & Embodiment at JRI Yoga Program, and therefore is an official Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Workshop/trainings accredited by JRI & the Director of the Center for Trauma & Embodiment at JRI David Emerson and Jenn Turner.

How is TCTSY different from "regular" yoga?

The emphasis is not on the yoga "forms", shapes, or stretches themselves, but instead, uses yoga forms as opportunities for choice and decision making around moving or not moving one's body. It is an evidenced-based protocol to help rewire neural connections that have become disrupted from trauma.

TCTSY may look, feel and sound different from a public yoga class at a gym or studio and it may take a few tries to get used to. It often may feel slower to more moderate paced at the start however be assured you can take your preferred options and pace at any time!

Who might TCTSY be suitable for?

TCTSY has been validated for complex trauma but could be suitable for everyBODY.

Some professions that this may benefit include: first responders (fire fighters, police, paramedics), clinicians and healthcare workers, support workers, teachers, lawyers, community workers, carers. Anyone in a caring profession.

TCTSY may help you if you have experienced complex trauma, sexual abuse, loss, post partum, physical injury, or other types of maltreatment or adverse experience.

Is TCTSY group therapy?

TCTSY group sessions are not group therapy and participants will not be asked to share trauma histories or to process memories. The facilitator at times may be a clinician however is there to hold the space for experiencing yoga.

During the course, cameras can be on or off.

The sessions are currently offered online via the Zoom platform. We ask that during the session, you choose whether your camera is on or off however the facilitator will be spotlighted during practice.

Do you offer scholarship places for the course?

Yes, a limited number of partial scholarships (50% rate) are available per course for people working with marginalised communities. Please email us at enquiries@atec.vic.edu.au to request this and tell us a bit about yourself, the work you do and why you are interested in the course.

I have a physical injury or disability

You are welcome to take choices in all forms that work for your body. You can always choose to stand, sit in a chair or floor, or lay down at anytime to practice regardless of what the facilitator is doing.

TCTSY can be practiced by any BODY including if you have limited mobility, flexibility and/or limbs.
